The Street Fighter 3 I am taking a look at today is better known as Street Fighter Alpha 3 or Street Fighter Zero 3 is you prefer. I am a massive fan of the Street Fighter series and I feel that what Capcom did with the Alpha series was amazing. The version I want to single out today is the Sega Saturn version, look this game is awesome on the PlayStation, Dreamcast, and the arcade too, but it is the Saturn that nailed this…. yes, the Saturn version is better than the Dreamcast one!
Let’s Go On A World Tour
The arcade version of Street Fighter 3 is awesome, but the home ports leave it standing. The main reason for this is that while you have your standard arcade mode. The main mode here is the World Tour Mode. Here you go all over the world taking on various fights, but the key is that you can improve your chosen character as you go. Back when this was first released this was actually a massive deal and something that had not been in a Street Fighter game before.
So Much To Do!
As well as the awesome World Tour Mode and the standard arcade mode where you could see each character's ending. Street Fighter 3 also had some other fun game modes for you to enjoy. The Dramatic Battle where you would take on a team of fighters was a lot of fun and really was quite “dramatic” in that it could be pretty intense stuff when you had hardly any health left. There are many verses modes that you can partake in as well which was something I had a great deal of fun with back in the day.
The Gang Is All Here & They Have Never Looked Better

This is an amazing looking game. The roster is stacked and the home ports got far more characters than the arcade version got which is awesome. Each character has a lot more personality here than in any other Street Fighter gamer up to this point. They have multiple colors they can fight in and even the stages look phenomenal. The stage design has some of the best artwork in the franchise's history and there is as you would expect some amazing songs to go along with the great graphics. The Sega Saturn version with the 4MB expansion pack is pretty much arcade-perfect in terms of its visuals. The Dreamcast also looks great. The PlayStation version is fine, but it is missing frames of animation, but if you have only played that version, you will not notice.
Street Fighting Action
The gameplay of Street Fighter 3 was the deepest the entire franchise had experienced at this point. You had three different types of “super bar” that you could select from. I always went for the more traditional one that was started in Super Street Fighter II Turbo, but the fact the game gave you a choice was really cool. The game was a lot of fun to play, but it had a real depth about it and a combo system that could be devastating when you knew what you were doing.
Have I got my point across that I love this game? I really do not have anything bad to say about this game. As far as 2D Street Fighter games go, this one here is probably number 1 or 2 of all time for me. It is a damn masterpiece of a fighting game and it is a game I can fire up any time and have a great time with no matter if I am playing against the AI or against a friend. One extra thing I want to add is that there is a port of this for the PSP that is also awesome and well worth checking out, but the PSP d-pad analog stick takes a while to get used to.
Final Score
Pros:
- It has a stacked roster
- Features many characters that were not in the arcade version
- The Sega Saturn version is near arcade perfect
- The World Tour mode is great
- It has many different game modes to enjoy
Cons:
- The PlayStation version is still good, but not as good as the two on Sega
- Might be a bit hard to get into for nonfighting game fans
